The word “fluffernutter” will likely bring a wave of nostalgia to anyone who grew up in New England. It was the essential grade school sandwich: peanut butter and marshmallow fluff on squishy white bread. In my house, we took it one step further and couldn’t imagine a Thanksgiving dinner that didn’t feature a dish of fluffernutter stuffed dates alongside the pies for dessert. Peanut butter and fluff? And technically fruit, too? Yes, please! Plus this is a no-cook recipe that is doable for even the youngest kitchen helpers.

Marshmallow Fluff: Invented in New England

There may be other brands of fluff, but when I grew up there was only one: Marshmallow Fluff. Invented in Somerville, MA in 1917, Fluff came to be manufactured in Lynn, Massachusetts. Later, a collaboration with Nestle brought what may be the most popular chocolate fudge recipe in America (Never Fail Fudge), and another with Kellogg’s cereal gave us Rice Krispie Treats. The factory was a landmark, visible from the train ride to or from Boston; when you saw the factory, you knew you were almost home.

This recipe was likely designed to promote the product, but I have never been able to find anything that is even similar in cookbooks or online. It was handed down from my mother’s family, although it was always my Dad who loved them best. Wherever it came from, I can’t imagine a Thanksgiving without them, and I hope that you will enjoy these old school treats too!

There are just a few ingredients, and a few simple steps. Start with pitted dried dates, peanut butter, Fluff, optional walnuts, and sugar.

Measure out equal amounts of peanut butter and fluff. Eyeballing it is fine–and that means it is very simple to scale the recipe up or down.

Here is where the magic happens: when you combine sweet, sticky Fluff and oily peanut butter, the mixture becomes firm enough to roll into balls.

Pinch off some of the peanut butter and Fluff mixture and stuff it into the dates.

Finally add an optional piece of walnut and roll the stuffed dates in sugar. You’re done!

Ingredients

• 8 oz dried dates, pitted
• 1/2 C creamy peanut butter
• 1/2 C marshmallow fluff
• walnut pieces optional
• 1/2 C sugar

Instructions

• Mix peanut butter and marshmallow fluff together until completely combined.
• Pinch off 1/2 tsp of the combined mixture and stuff it into the date. Optional: add a piece of walnut on top of the peanut butter and fluff mixture.
• Roll the stuffed dates in sugar and serve. Dates can be stored covered in plastic wrap at room temperature.
